For foods to be certified Kosher, the manufacturing process, equipment and ingredients must be approved by a Rabbi or an orthodox representative of a synagogue or certifying agency. There are over 200 certifying agencies in the United States, the Orthodox Union or OU® and the Ko® being among the largest and most recognized. The word Kosher when pertaining to food means that the food is being prepared according to Jewish dietary laws (Kashrut), described in the Torah, and interpreted throughout generations by Rabbis. According to the laws of Kashrut, food is divided into four classifications: Fleishig (meat), Milchig (dairy), Pareve (neutral) and Treif (non-Kosher). Many foods are what is called intrinsically Kosher, or Kosher by nature. However, in order for these foods to bear a Kosher legend or symbol, the food must be approved by a Rabbi and packed in a facility that has been Koshered. Pareve foods are considered neutral because they contain neither meat nor dairy ingredients. Foods such as VICTORIA peppers, olives, marinara sauce are Pareve. Foods that contain dairy products such as VICTORIA vodka sauce, pesto sauce and artichoke dip are labeled with a Kosher Dairy symbol. For a creature of the sea to be deemed Kosher it must have fins and scales and cannot be a scavenger. Therefore salmon and tuna are Kosher but shellfish and catfish are not. Clams are not Kosher, therefore VICTORIA clam sauces are considered Treif or non-Kosher. The Fleishig group of foods or meat has the most detailed list of rules. For example only land animals with cloven hooves that chew their cud are Kosher, which means cows, sheep and goats are Kosher, while pigs and rabbits are not. For the feathered group of animals, chicken and ducks are Kosher, while birds of prey and scavengers are not. Insects, reptiles and amphibians are not Kosher. For Kosher foods to remain Kosher, Treif items or non-Kosher items must not come into contact with each other. For example, a Kosher hamburger cooked with bacon would not be Kosher, because bacon is not Kosher and once the bacon touches the Kosher beef, the beef becomes non-Kosher. Under the same rules a cheeseburger is not Kosher (even if Kosher beef and Kosher cheese are used) because once the cheese and beef come in contact, neither remain Kosher. Milchig and Fleishig cannot come into contact with each other. The Kosher laws prohibiting the commingling of meat and dairy products. Kosher is being more and more perceived by the American public to be an added sign of purity, not only do observant Jews look for the Kosher symbol, but so do Muslims, Seven day Adventist and Jehovah's Witnesses. A: Yes, VICTORIA produces a very large variety of products that are certified Kosher by the Ko®, one of the most respected Kosher supervisory agencies on the world. Q: Does this automatically make my product Kosher? A: No. We must register your brand name with the Ko®, you must sign a private label agreement and a nominal yearly fee must be paid. You are then allowed to use the Ko®, symbol on your label. Q: Can any product be made Kosher? A: Obviously there are strict guidelines, which must adhere to Jewish law. However, many products are intrinsically Kosher: VICTORIA only buys from firms that will furnish a Kosher certificate. We will be pleased to go over your list of ingredients and advise as to their Kosher status. Q: I want my product Kosher, but I have a significant amount of labels. How can you help me? A: VICTORIA can apply a Kosher symbol to a cap or bottle through ink jet coding, there is no need to throw your present labels away. Q: What ingredients are not Kosher? A: All the ingredients used in our manufacturing process are approved by the Ko®. Some of the ingredients that are not Kosher are: Pork and any pork related product, shellfish such as clams, shrimp, lobster. There are restricted uses on wine vinegar, and products with mix of meat and dairy can not be kosher. Q: What does Pareve mean? A: Pareve means that the product is neutral, neither meat or dairy derived, and can be used with either meat or diary. Q: Are your products Kosher for Passover? A: Passover requires special Koshering and this is done only when requested, as a supervising Rabbi must Kosherize the equipment for passover. There is an added fee for this service. By the use of the Ko® insignia, you may proudly let the consumer know that your product is kosher certified.
